The lyrics to my songs are generally written first, with no musical structure in mind. They are intended to tell a brief story about an event, person or place in time. They usually come to me quickly and the song takes verbal form generally within a half hour or so. It is then that I add a musical structure to them, which is commonly blues and jazz based. Others follow a folk song musical tradition. While the basic lyrics do come quickly, they are often honed during live performances, when new words and ideas strike me. Since there is an improvisational component to my lyrics and music, I do not strictly confine myself to an exact version of the song until I have performed it live many times over and am finally satisfied with it. From then on, I usually perform the song exactly the same every time and refine the more subtle performative aspects of it.
